Lismore City Concert Band welcomes new players

Being part of a band is fantastic for enhancing not only musical skills but also your capacity to work as part of a team & widens your sense of personal community. And it’s a lot of fun!

Can you play an instrument?  Read music?  Perhaps you used to play an instrument at school, or have always wanted to play in a band & have been waiting for an opportunity to come along?

There is no need for an audition.  The level of pieces played ranges from Grade 1 to 4 [AMEB].  Tunes are tailored to suit most abilities but even if a bit daunting at first – don’t worry – just play what you’re capable of & you’ll soon get the hang of it.  You WILL need some level of ability to read written music notation ~ your reading ability will skyrocket as you continue to play with us.

ALSO!  We have a number of INSTRUMENTS available for loan to band members. Talk to us.

Which instrumental sound tickles your fancy?  Below are the core instruments that belong within the

‘Concert Band’ format – i.e. Brass/Woodwind/Percussion [sorry, no guitars, accordians, etc] –

  • Flutes
  • Oboes
  • Clarinets
  • French Horns
  • Saxophones
  • Flugelhorns
  • Trumpets/Cornets
  • Euphoniums
  • Baritones
  • Trombones
  • Tuba
  • PERCUSSION!!  [A critical section of the band! Depending on the tune, instruments involved include glockenspiel, drumkit, maraccas, etc … quiet or loud;  & possibly all of those within the one song!!]

Check out this article on Wikipedia if you’d like to know more about this particular kind of music ensemble.

If this sounds like the band for you, why not join our weekly rehearsals & experience it for yourself?  Many successful musicians started out playing with a concert band ~ it’s an excellent way to learn how to play within a large ensemble [listening skills] + how to negotiate changes in key & time signatures within a piece of music + how to appreciate that very important aspect of music, dynamics.

Rehearsals are held during school term on Monday evenings [within NSW School terms] in the performance space within D-block [Music Department] of Southern Cross University’s LISMORE Campus.  Come along to observe a rehearsal in action to see just how friendly we are & to help decide whether you’d like to join! 🙂
